During a police press conference this evening, the police stated that four more bodies were found today (for a total of ten bodies) in the backyard of Anthony Sowell’s home in Cleveland. The initial six bodies that were found are confirmed female and five were strangled. The four bodies found today have been delivered to the coroner and no further information about them has been released.
The police stated that they found a bucket in the basement that had a skull inside. The police are continuing to search the house and grounds, and they are actively searching cold cases to see if any might be related to this case.
CNN confirmed that Anthony Sowell did serve about eight years in the Marines, from 1977-1985. He has also been convicted of rape and spent time in jail for that.
Anthony Sowell was not on probation or parole, but he was required to check in once a year, and he did. Sowell was also required to update his sex offender status and the state was required to do that in person and it was done on an annual basis. September 22, 2009 was Sowell’s last check-in.
In 2007, a report was filed with the health department about a stench coming from the house, and another report was filed in 2008 from another neighbor. CNN called the local health department and they stated that they did not know if the report was followed up on, but that they get 20,000 reports a year.
The police stated that Anthony Sowell has been charged with five counts of aggravated murder, rape and assault.
In a similar case in 2007, two men in Utah went missing for over a month until their bodies were discovered buried under a shed in a shallow grave. The entire area was surrounded with junk that the owner collected. The police suspected a registered sex offender, Martin Nelson that was already in jail at the time the bodies were found. Nelson has been convicted of the two men's deaths. Another young man disappeared around the same time, and it was suspected that Nelson was also responsible for his disappearance.
