Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland in September 2009, and was being held for possible US extradition has been released to his Alpine chalet on a $4.5 million bail. On Thursday, the Swiss government agreed by not contesting the request. Roman Polanski was charged with having sex with a 13-year-old girl in California in 1978. Roman Polanski has thanked the French President Nicolas Sarkozy for being "very effective" in his release.
Roman Polanski has been sitting in a jail cell in Switzerland since September 27, 2009, and now Swiss authorities have agreed to release Polanski to his luxurious $1.6 million Alpine chalet with a heavy bail. Polanski will be issued an ankle bracelet that will monitor his whereabouts at his house, but not one with GPS to track where he is if he leaves his estate.
The US has made an official request asking Polanski to be extradited from Switzerland back to the US, but Swiss authorities have agreed or disagreed. Roman Polanski's lawyers have been working on trying to get the case dismissed for good and will go to court in California on December 10, 2009.
A controversial documentary about the life of Roman Polanski was screened at the Sundance Film Festival, in Park City, Utah in 2008. HBO bought all domestic rights to the film, while Weinstein Co. purchased the international rights to the documentary, according to UPI.
