You might as well. He's already seen you naked.

We may have one of the highest divorce rates in the world, but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy the act of courting our future ex-wives and ex-husbands. Flirting is an essential tool to charm the object of your affection, and being able to tap into that charm at a moment’s notice can make the difference between an eyeroll and a phone number. Here are some fun facts to keep in mind the next time you’re at a bar and spot “the one” doing Jell-O shots off her friend’s navel.

You’ve got 30 seconds—and then it’s over. That’s what one behavioral study in Germany concluded. The study concluded that after half a minute, a man and a woman know whether they fit together. And remember: If you’ve only got 30 seconds to dazzle, nix the “Nice shoes—they’ll look good next to my bed tomorrow morning” stuff.

Flirting is good for your health. Studies show that flirtatious people have higher white blood-cell counts, which improve both immunity and health.

There’s more than one way to do it. Scientists have discovered 52 specific  “flirting signals” used by humans. The most common signal? The saucy hairflip, of course.

It’s still illegal in some cities. In Little Rock, AR, there’s a law on the books warning that engaging in lascivious banter may result in a 30-day jail term. Another outdated law in New York City decrees that men can be fined $25 for gazing suggestively at a female; a second conviction stipulates the offender don a pair of blinders whenever he goes outside.

We’re doing it while driving. Forget trendy bars—the freeway is the newest meat market. A full 62 percent of drivers have flirted with someone in a different vehicle while commuting, and 31 percent of those flirtations resulted in a date.

Women are shy. In one study 89% of women said they would feel too nervous to approach someone they’re attracted to. The good news is that 93% said that if a guy were interested he should approach,  even if the woman is with a group of girlfriends.

Technology does the flirting for you. Half of all cell phone users have texted flirtatious (be honest—dirty) messages to keep things spicy while away from their partner.

Easy on the eye contact.  According to the Social Issues Research Centre, the most common mistake people make when flirting is maintaining too much eye contact. I don’t want to critique anyone’s style, but you know who else maintained a lot of intense eye contact? Hannibal Lector. Just something to think about.

Sometimes playful gestures aren’t what they seem. Research has shown that men tend to routinely mistake friendly behavior for flirting. Just like in that Lifetime movie (Tiffani Amber Theissen said no, dammit! She said no!).

The language of flirting is universal. Whether you’re a cosmopolitan single gal in New York City or a Polynesian princess, when it comes to enticing the opposite sex, women employ the very same move: smiling, arching their eyebrows, then averting their gaze and giggling. Other species flirt, too: Birds, lizards, and even bugs have their own way of attracting attention. I had a friend whose cat was a downright trollop, leaving me more than a little insulted when he presented himself to me, then, finding that I was uninterested, came on to a sofa pillow.
