According to the 2009 Edition of "Where the Jobs Are," the federal government will soon go on a hiring binge in order to replace many of the baby boomers who have reached the age of retirement.
By 2012, the 35 agencies that represent 99% of all federal jobs will need to hire more than 270,000 mission-critical positions. Compared to the previous three years, filling these positions will cause a 40% jump in hiring during fiscal years 2010 to 2012.
You might be thinking, "If there are 35 agencies that are hiring, who is going to hire the most? Where is my best chance at employment?" The top three agencies that will be hiring the largest number of employees will be the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.
The primary hiring projections fall into the following five categories:
*Medical and Public Health -- 54,114
*Security and Protection -- 52,077
*Compliance and Enforcement -- 31,276
*Legal -- 23,596
*Administration/Program Management -- 17,287
Outside of the fact that over a quarter million positions will need to filled, the Federal Hiring Process Improvement Act of 2009 states that federal agencies shall make the hiring process "more applicant friendly." Bill S.736 aims to make the process more effective and efficient, simplifying and shortening the application process. Part of S.736 also states that announcements for federal vacancies will be made in "plain language" and status updates will be provided to applicants in a timely manner. With the current lengthy, confusing and seemingly mysterious application process, this new streamlined procedure will be welcomed news to any applicant!
