It may sound like an odd sports mix, but bicycling racing and auto racing have shared Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on the Monterey Peninsula for years.
Since 1957, the Monterey Peninsula track is host each year to many international motor sports events. The same track and the surrounding recreation areas have hosted the Sea Otter Classic, the festival of cycling for 19 years.
But motor sports and cycling will now mix when the American Le Mans series celebrates 11th season. Drivers and fans will begin the three-day event in a one-hour charity bike ride around the 2.238-mile circuit at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9
The charity bike ride will be free to all ticket holders for the Monterey Sports Car Championship and $10 to all other participants. All proceeds will be donated to charity.
In previous charity bike rides on the track, Grand Am driver Patrick Dempsey and MotoGP rider Casey Stoner have pedaled bwith the fans.
The cycling event will be the preamble to the The Monterey Sports Car Championships featuring the season finale of the Monterey Sports Car Championships.
Specialized Bicycles based in nearby Morgan Hill will provide equipment support for the event.
