After a successful opening on Friday, Oct. 16, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is now closed again until the snowpack grows stronger.
Late Sunday afternoon MMSA's PR Manager Daniel Hansen sent the following e-mail: "After a very careful evaluation of the current snow conditions, it has been determined that we should not continue to operate for skiing and snowboarding. We will not open as of tomorrow, October 19. Record temperatures and high water content of the snow combined for quickly deteriorating conditions. All options were evaluated but right now the ground and snow are too wet.
"There is a slight chance of a small storm this week and a drop in temperatures. We will re-evaluate on a daily basis and do our best to keep you informed."
Friday's opening day marked the second earliest opening Mammoth has ever seen. Thousands of skiers and snowboarders showed up to take advantage of the Mountain's special, one day offer of free skiing and boarding, but the snow was not strong enough to hold out longer then the weekend.
Mammoth's original opening day was scheduled for Nov. 12 and opening festivities are still scheduled for that weekend.
Thunder, lightning and rain filled the air as the sun went down on Sunday evening.
