I know it's a little late, but I’ve planned a few Oscar theme screening receptions here in DC and I wanted to share some ideas that you can try at home.
Party Soundtrack
ITunes Essentials has taken the guess work out putting together your Oscar Party playlist. Just search “Academy Award Nominate Songs” for a fantastic selection of current and past nominees. Guest will have a good time trying to figure out which movies the songs are from and singing along to old favorites.
Award Winning Decor
I’ve been lucky enough to have an in-house theater to borrow from. Film canisters are great as décor or, when properly lined, as serving containers for snacks. If you don’t have an actual theater to plunder, check out party stores for “movie night” theme products. If you have time for a little DIY, make your own by adorning shallow cookie tins with film strips and labeling them with the names of this year’s best picture nominees.
As for color, go for gold, gold and more gold. Pull out your gold Christmas balls, vases, and platters. Nothing says Oscars more. Paired with deep jewel tones of red or purple, gold accents will look regal not gaudy.
Lights, Camera, Action
I truly believe in the power of lighting to completely transform a space, whether it’s a grand ballroom or your living room. The television will be casting its own glow, so dim the lights and use candles to set the mood. For something a little more fun, check out this table lamp in the shape of a movie camera from Target.
Signature Cocktail
At this year’s reception we served the “Award Winner”, which is just a classic combination of champagne and a bitters soaked sugar cube. Place your botters soaked sugar cube in the bottom of a champagne flute. Slowly add champagne and garnish with a lemon twist. It’s simple to make and champagne has a way of making anyone fill just a little more glamorous.
Big Screen Inspired Goodies
This year’s screening featured the Oscar Nominate Film, Man on Wire, a documentary by James Marsh about a French tightrope walker’s daring and illegal performance between the Twin Towers. So, for our pre-reception Occasions Caterers served a delicious French menu inspired by the film. Put together a menu inspired by your favorite nominee. Rooting for Slum Dog Millionaire? Treat your guests to a few Indian dishes. Are you fan of Milk? Why not put together a milkshake bar or serve milk out of old school cartons.
