Are seated dinners a thing of the past? That was one of the many topics up for debate as a panel of local event professionals discussed trends in fundraising events and galas. At the DC ISES October meeting It’s Just Lunch…And Then Some!, planners and vendors filled the Harman Center to enjoy a delicious meal and listen to a panel of experts discuss how they’re staying a float in these tough economic times. Panelists included; Ed Zakreski, Director of Development for The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Diana Mayhew, President of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, and Eric Michael, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Occasions Caterers. The group focused on strategies for building partnerships as well as how events have evolved in order to remain successful fundraising tools.

What are some key things to keep in mind when planning your next fundraising event?
Be straight with vendors about your budget. Let them know what you’re working with and be realistic about the effects that cuts may have on the scale of your event.
Get creative! Think up new and exciting ways to wow your guests. Draw upon what’s unique about your organization. The Shakespeare Theatre Company used dancers from the Washington Ballet to help get party goers to the dance floor at their annual event. All it takes is one really special element to leave a lasting mark with attendees.
Remember that an event needn’t follow the same formula every year. Just because you’ve always done a traditional seated dinner doesn’t mean you can’t mix it up and host an elegant standing reception.
Tie in your mission or a specific program whenever possible. People are getting pickier about where they invest their money. Don’t lose sight of your organization in the glitz and glamor of a gala event. Seize the opportunity to educate your supporters about an upcoming program or recognize a recent achievement for the organization. Remind people just what their money is going to support.
