Dogs are a common sight in the metropolitan areas of Moscow. And canines that were once banned from joining their owners on the city subways are now allowed to come aboard. But not all the dogs ride under the watchful eye of a human commuter.
The subway system is also used by stray dogs that have become so common that no one thinks twice about silent four-legged commuters getting on and off with the crowds. According to the Wall Street Joural, throngs of strays roam the city in search of food and have had to adapt to survive as the city evolves from former Soviet days of life.
The dogs seem to know that more people mean better scraps and make their way into the city during the day, then back to the suburbs at night. Cunning street dogs have learned which routes to take, when to get on and which stop to get off. Sometimes, dogs will fall asleep much like a person and miss their stop.
The behaviour of the dogs is so unique that zoologists are currently studying their behavior. There is also a website dedicated to the subway dogs: www.metrodog.ru.
