Can you remember your best friend from grade school? I bet most of us can--that special kid who we hung out with constantly. For those of us in towns and cities, best friends were dictated by distance when we were young. In the neighborhood was best because we could play together after school.
Can you remember your best friend from high school? For girls, this was a most important role. This was the person we confided in when we had a a crush or fell in love. And the person we complained to about our parents.
But for a lot of boys and girls in high school, the group became more important than an indiviual best friend.
What about college? Did you have a best friend then?
As an adult, our friends change, because we change. When I meet up with my best friend from high school it is so much fun. But after a while we run out of things to talk about because our lives have gone in such different directions.
As middle aged folks, one of my brothers is fond of saying, "I don't need friends, I have my brothers and sisters." I find that funny, but also true to some extent.
Having lived in many different places, my friends have sometimes been situational. And because of that, some have stayed close and others have drifted away.
