The Memphis Grizzlies waived point guard Mike Taylor today (Thursday). Taylor was a training camp invitee considered a long shot to make the regular season roster. He appeared in six preseason games, averaging two points and 2.3 assists in eight minutes.
Taylor’s fate was probably sealed after the October 14th home game against the Hawks, where he had five points on 2-for-6 shooting, with five assists and six turnovers in 20 minutes. Taylor was looking for a team after the Los Angeles Clippers let him go over the summer. He averaged 5.7 points and two assists in 15 minutes per game, appearing in 51 games for the Clippers as a rookie last season.
The Grizzlies roster is now down to the regular season maximum of 15 players, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be more cuts. NBA teams can carry as few as 13 players, and coach Lionel Hollins has not tipped his hand on how many players he will keep. The most likely candidate, should the Grizzlies let another player go, is probably forward Trey Gilder. Center Steven Hunter, who came over from Denver as part of a trade over the summer, is the fourth center on the roster, but is owed a lot more money than Gilder. Guard Marko Jaric has not been with the team in training camp, as he looks for another team to take him. Jaric sought permission to explore his options after the Grizzlies signed Marcus Williams to back up Mike Conley at point guard, then signed veteran scorer Allen Iverson.
The Grizzlies play their final preseason game Friday morning (that’s right, morning) at Charlotte. Game time is 9:30am Memphis time (CDT), with radio coverage on WRBO, 103.5 FM.
The regular season opener is Wednesday (Oct. 28th) at FedExForum, against the Detroit Pistons.
