Those of you who have been asking (and you know who you are), “When is LOST coming back?” finally have an answer.

On the heels of an official Season 6 image release comes the announcement that the sixth and final season of LOST will begin on February 2, 2010. That’s when the series moves to Tuesday nights – following V if that show remains in its current timeslot (although V is rumored to be moving to 10 o’clock to avoid direct conflict with American Idol).

A press release from ABC (in addition to Cuse’s tweet) announced a special all-night Feb. 2 event with the two-hour season premier beginning at 9pm, preceded by an 8pm recap that will get everyone up to speed after the hiatus. Fans have been promised 18 hours of programming this season, and ABC has confirmed that the premier will comprise two of those hours, instead of counting as one episode.

Spoiler alert! The release also confirmed the following cast: Naveen Andrews as Sayid, Nestor Carbonell as Richard Alpert, Emilie de Ravin as Claire, Michael Emerson as Ben, Jeff Fahey as Frank Lapidus, Matthew Fox as Jack, Jorge Garcia as Hurley, Josh Holloway as Sawyer, Daniel Dae Kim as Jin, Yunjin Kim as Sun, Ken Leung as Miles, Evangeline Lilly as Kate, Terry O’Quinn as Locke and Zuleikha Robinson as Ilana.

Settling into its new time slot at nine on Tuesdays, LOST goes head-to-head with the most popular new show of the season, NCIS: Los Angeles. ABC shifted LOST from its previous home on Wednesday nights because the new comedy block led by Modern Family is doing well there.

A February start date insures that LOST will not be bumped by the Olympics as originally thought.  Now rumors are circulating that it's no coincidence that the final launch of LOST coincides with Groundhog Day.  Perhaps the LOSTies must re-live a portion of time over again until they get it right (similar to the plot of the movie Groundhog Day)? Kind of gives credence to this dialogue, don’t you think?

MAN IN BLACK: “They come, fight, they destroy, and corrupt – it always ends the same.”
JACOB: “It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.”

The countdown continues, folks. It won’t be long now:

I’m still trying to decide if that’s a good thing … the start of Season 6 of course eventually means the end of Season 6 – and the end of LOST.  No more speculation or water cooler moments.  Alas, all good things must come to an end.

In the meantime, however, check out the final Dharma Initiative webisode which was released earlier this week and attempts to uncover what's going on with the bizarre and secret organization. For more on the Dharma tapes, go here and here

And don’t forget to get your registration in as semester 1 at LOST University begins December 8.

Your opinion counts: What do you think of the February start date (vs. January as we’ve seen in past seasons)? And LOST has never aired on Tuesdays; how will that change affect you? What do you think about pairing LOST with V? I’m sure Elizabeth Mitchell fans have an opinion on that one!
