Prinsjesdag occurred today in the Netherlands with HM Queen Beatrix speaking to a joint session of Congress. As is usual for this event under the reign of Queen Beatrix, it is something of a “Royal Ascot” for Holland. The hats and outfits of the ladies wear have begun to rival the beauty of the Golden Carriage itself. All the senior members of the royal family were in attendance – HM The Queen, TRH The Prince of Orange and Princess Maxima, TRH Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, HRH Princess Margriet and Professor Mr Pieter van Vollenhoven. The expected heightened security was certainly noticeable, but did not detract from the stunning sights of this annual event.
On more serious topics, the outlook for 2010 is somber economically for The Netherlands, as is the case for many countries throughout the world. The Queen stated that “The times we are living in demand determination and a willingness to change. The global financial and economic crisis has hit countries hard, including the Netherlands.” However, the Queen also pointed out that “… it is important to continue working towards a society in which people feel a sense of togetherness, respect one another and share responsibility. A good upbringing and good education are the foundation of responsible citizenship.” In closing, she wished the ministers the best in their difficult task in the coming year stating that “In discharging your duties, you may feel supported in the knowledge that many are wishing you wisdom and join me in praying for strength and God's blessing upon you.”
After the Speech from the Throne, the Queen and the royal family returned to the Palace where they gathered on the balcony and waved the crowds.
