The Court of Hamburg awarded HRH Princess Madeleine of Sweden substantial damages yesterday. In doing so, the court stated that her human rights had been violated. The 27-year-old Princess was awarded $560,000 due to the fact that two magazines had published a multitude of incorrect articles and stories between 2000 and 2004. The stories published by the magazines were typical tabloid fodder, topics such as the Princess’ love life, marriage plans, and rumored pregnancies. The amount of the judgment is the largest ever in a German case such as this. The Swedish Royal Court said in a statement that the court ruled the articles were “untrue and degrading”. In addition that the Princess “intends to donate the money she is finally awarded to charity.”
Princess Madeleine has been dating her boyfriend Jonas Bergstrom since 2002. But they have announced no plans to be married.
