Pistachio nuts are one of the healthiest nuts and one researcher used these nuts to discover that people can feel more satisfied and eat fewer calories when eating certain foods.
James Painter, PhD, RD, professor and chair of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences at Eastern Illinois University, has come up with a non-dieting approach to weight loss. He calls this the "Pistachio Principle." Experiments he has done have shown that people can eat fewer calories and still feel as satisfied after eating than people who eat more calories.
Painter will point out that diets such as Weight Watchers and Atkins don't have great long term results.
In one of Painter's behavioral studies, subjects self-selected helpings of either shelled or unshelled pistachios. Since pistachios in their shells take more effort and time to eat, the calories the group who selected these nuts ate 50% less than those eaten by the shelled-nut group. And most importantly both groups felt equally satisfied and full.
It has been suggested in light of this study that people eat food that they don't eat quickly such as an orange that has to be peeled rather than orange juice. If you want some peanuts go for those in the shell and cut up fruit and vegetables into smaller pieces.
