Thanksgiving is practically already here and what better way to celebrate then participate in the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot this year. But it's only in 18 days! Follow this crash course for running the 5K and you'll be smiling that you burned over 300 calories before you dug into that cranberry sauce.

Everyday will not be running if you are starting from scratch. Ideally you would like to give yourself time to build up the mileage by only 10% each week. But since there is less then 3 weeks to the race and you have to keep the tradition of running this race we will incorporate cross training in order to avoid injury.

Day 1: Let's get started with a slow base run. If you are a true beginner then the distance will be 1 mile. Run and walk this mile, of course running as much as possible. Don't be discouraged if you walk more then you run, just remember that it always gets better after the first day. Soon you'll be looking back at this day with a devious smile because you'll be running the entire mile with ease. It just takes a little dedication...and only 18 days is not very daunting.

Keep track of you progress on fun websites such as Strands and MapMyRun.

Check back tomorrow for Day 2 workout!

Happy Running!
