Word today out of Lake Grove, Long Island. The long standing latke-eating record has been broken!
For those of you not familiar with the traditional Chanukah artery-clogger, latkes are also known as potato pancakes.
Sunday's sanctioned competitive eating contest was won by Canadian (CANADIAN???) Pete Czerwinski -- a 6-foot-2, body builder. Czerwinski downed 46 latkes in eight minutes. That's seven pounds of potato pancakes, folks! Will Millender, a 380-pound Brooklyn community college student, gets an honorable mention coming in second place with 29 belly bustin' latkes.
According to New York Newsday, this was the first time Petey ever saw, touched or ate a latke. "I'm just a power eater. My brain never signals that I'm full," said Czerwinski, 23, a mechanical engineering student.
Czerwinski won $300 at the event held at Lake Grove's Zan's Deli.
Up next, a cheek-pinching contest with the Island's top Jewish grandmothers. The current record is 54 bubbe pinches, which also happens to be triple good luck in Judiasm.
Happy Chanukah!
