Zurich, Switzerland (MadGeographer)

If you’re looking to take a trip to Europe in the next couple of months and are flexible with your dates and destinations, you might consider a trip to the Emerald Isle or to the Alps in the heart of Europe. This week, U.S. Airways is offering low fares between Charlotte and Dublin, Ireland (from $319 roundtrip), and between Charlotte and Zurich, Switzerland (from $190 each way).

Dublin, Ireland

As the capital and largest city of Ireland, Dublin offers abundant opportunities for exploring its history and cultural. The city also serves as a good starting place for exploring beyond the city around Ireland’s beautiful and fascinating countryside. If you enjoy literary history, Dublin has much to offer as it has produced many world-famous literary figures. Dublin also has a vibrant nightlife and is one of the more youthful cities in Europe. Dublin was also voted the “Friendliest City in Europe” in 2007. Shopping opportunities are also abundant in Dublin.

To explore other areas of Ireland beyond Dublin, you’ll find it easy to travel out of the city by car, bus, and rail, as Dublin is at the center of Ireland’s transportation network. Other popular places and things to see and do across Ireland include: the cities of Cork, Waterford, Shannon, Galway, Kerry, and many other smaller towns and villages; the many sites from Celtic history that dot the Irish landscape, as well as castles (such as the famous Blarney Castle near Cork where you can kiss the Blarney Stone) and other historical and cultural sites; the spectacular scenery of the dramatic coastline surrounding Ireland, particularly in the south and west with high, rocky cliffs meeting the north Atlantic (such as Mizen Head, the most southwesterly point on the island, or the dramatic Cliffs of Moher). And don’t forget to visit a pub while in Ireland and partake of the food and drink available there.

Fly aboard U.S. Airways from Charlotte to Dublin from $319 roundtrip plus taxes and fees. The stipulations for this fare include a roundtrip purchase requirement and tickets are non-refundable, a three-day advance purchase with a Saturday night stay, and the fare is valid Monday through Thursday through May 25, 2009.

See the official tourism sites for Dublin and Ireland for more travel and trip planning information.

Zurich, Switzerland

As the largest city in Switzerland, and considered the financial, cultural and commercial hub of the country, Zurich has a lot to offer and also serves as a nice place to start when exploring all of Switzerland and the Swiss countryside. Road, rail, and air connections in and out of the city are abundant and efficient. Zurich, located in the northern part of Switzerland, has been named as one of the world’s best quality of life cities and one of the world’s wealthiest cities. The city itself offers many historical and cultural attractions, such as numerous notable churches and museums, Lindenhoff Hill, parks, and gardens. Zurich naturally has abundant options for a variety of accommodations, food, events, shopping, and a vibrant nightlife scene.

Beyond Zurich, Switzerland is world famous for its scenic and cultural beauty. From the majestic Alps and Alpine vistas (you’ve most likely heard of the area’s most famous mountain, the Matterhorn), to the charming towns and villages scattered across the Swiss countryside, Swiss Plateau, and Swiss Alps, visitors to Switzerland will surely be delighted in what they find. Travelers to Zurich and to Switzerland needn’t confine their trip to Europe solely to Switzerland. Travel out of Switzerland to any of the surrounding countries, such as Austria, Germany, France, Italy, and Liechtenstein, is quite easy and straightforward with many road, rail, and air connections.

Fly aboard U.S. Airways from Charlotte to Zurich from $190 each way plus taxes and fees. You must act fast for this fare to Zurich, however, because the ticket must be purchased by Monday April 6, 2009. Travel to and from Zurich on this fare is valid from April 4, 2009 to May 3, 2009. The stipulations for this fare include a three-day advance with no minimum stay and a 30 day maximum stay, and the ticket is non-refundable.
