If the purse fits: how to fit a handbag to your body

Believe it or not, all purses were not created equally – and for good reason. There’s more to buying a new handbag than just fashion and functionality – your bag should fit your body type as well.
For decades, women have been buying purses not just as a sack to throw our belongings in, but they also have a purpose -- work tote, going out clutch, weekend handbag. And in the last ten plus years, purses have gone from utilitarian to status symbol with highly coveted bags like the Fendi Spy Bag and the Louis Vuitton Murakami Bag. While fashion and functionality is important to finding your perfect handbag, how the purse looks on you is equally important.
Where do you go to for advice having anything to do with purses? The handbag gurus of Bagsnob.com, Tina Craig and Kelly Cook, review, rate and rave about the latest and greatest in designer handbags. Here are some tips these blogging bag ladies had to offer:
“Being a petite girl, I always take size into consideration. I don't shy away from large bags but it should be in proportion. For example if a petite woman wants an oversized bag, make sure the shoulder strap(s) fit high and snug on the shoulder so it's not both wide AND long,” offers Tina Craig, Co-Founder, Snob Global Media. “If a longer tote is being considered, it should not be too wide or bulky. Flat bags are best when small girls want the oversized look. Givenchy Sacca is flat (expandable with three compartments so it still fits a lot!) and wide with short handles, perfect for petite women!”

“I'm 5'6," so I'm not tall but my broad shoulders give me an athletic build. Although bags are one size fits all, there are a few things to consider when it comes to fit, because some bags definitely do not fit all. Over the shoulder bags are the number one problem because the drop on the straps do not go under everyone's arms. Make sure you try it on with a jacket on. Or better yet, get bags that have adjustable shoulder straps - always a deciding factor for me! And small bags are always a no-no if you are on the tall side, it'll just make you look bigger,” advises Kelly Cook, Co-Founder, Snob Global Media. “My rule of thumb for the perfect proportion, get a bag that is at least twice as wide as your hand fully spread apart. And thick straps, none of those long stringy spaghetti strap bags! And one last thing that is sometimes overlooked, if you have big hands, make sure the bag opens wide enough for you to fully reach in. Some bags have a ridiculously small opening, which is inconvenient for everyone regardless of size because you can't ever find anything!”
