CNN’s Lou Dobbs finds himself stirring the pot once again with a segment on Monday evening’s show blasting a new policy in Baltimore schools – going veggie one day a week by offering up a vegetarian lunch on Mondays.
Predictably, the American Meat Institute, a trade organization of processors and packers, were quick to decry the new policy. American’s over-reliance on meat as a source of protein, however, has been soundly linked to a myriad of our country’s health challenges.
There’s meat and there’s meat, as well. Few cafeteria lunches feature grass-fed angus beef or organic, free-range chicken breast. Too often, the “meat” school districts can afford is comprised of the lowest cuts, processed and shaped into logs, stars, or cartoon characters and then deep-fried in trans-fat laden oils.
Skipping the processed, deep-fried, machine-shaped nuggets once a week…unhealthy indoctrination or the ingredients for healthy living?
How about, Congratulations to Baltimore for giving kids an introduction to real food?
