Triathlons: Here to stay in DC
For the past 24 years, the premier multisport race in the Washington DC area had been the Reston Triathlon. In more recent years the Reston Sprint Triathlon has been added. But the strong contender and only major triathlon held in Washington DC, the Nation’s Triathlon, is here to stay.
The Nation’s Triathlon, an Olympic or International Distance triathlon, is composed of a 1.5k swim, 40k bike ride, and a 10k run. The course winds through America’s most cherished icons. Many racers comment on the inspiring feeling of racing next to the
Washington Monument and the
Lincoln Memorial.
Started three years ago, The Nation’s Triathlon, which is put on by the Nation’s Triathlon LLC had a rocky start. In the inaugural year, the swim was cancelled due to high pollutant levels in the Potomac River. That instantly converted the race from a triathlon, to a biathlon. Every effort has been made since to avoid any similar issue.
The Nation’s Triathlon draws local triathlon standouts including
DC Mayor Adrian Fenty. The Navy Triathlon team has been a strong contender all three years. Both the incredible scenery of the nation’s capital and the opportunity to race along side these notable, dedicated athletes has helped to increase the number of participants each year.
The change that the racers can expect this year is the teaming up of the Nation’s Triathlon with The
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s
Team in Training training program has helped many new triathletes complete their first triathlon. Great sponsorship and superior event coordination has ensured that this race will be one that we will be looking forward to year after year.
