After what looked to be a quiet offseason recruiting-wise for the Dawgs, they racked up three commitments in a little over a day and a half to bring their total verbal commitments to eight before the season begins.
On Monday the 15th, the Dawgs picked up offensive tackle Brent Benedict out of Jacksonville, FL. Benedict is out of Bolles High School, which was a University of Florida and Florida State stronghold as little as three years ago. Adding the tackle provides needed depth at the offensive line, especially the tackle position. Austin Long, a 2009 signee, is currently undergoing physical therapy on a bad back and even though the prospects are good for a full recovery, if Long were to not be able to play, the Dawgs could be dangerously thin on offensive tackles in 2010. Offensive Line Coach Stacey Searels has been great at recruiting top tier offensive linemen, but very few true offensive tackles. Benedict helps fill a void for the Dawgs should he stay with his commitment until signing day.
Shortly thereafter on Tuesday the 16th, the Dawgs inked two more recruits -- Demetre Baker (OLB) out of Orange Park, FL and Michael Bennett (WR) out of Alpharetta, Georgia.
Bennett was the first to actually commit, with his verbal coming in this morning. He received the offer from UGA and committed shortly thereafter. Bennett has great size on him at 6'2" and already has 188 lbs. on his frame. Once he gets to school, he could easily add 10-15 lbs. of good muscle and not sacrifice too much of his 4.55 forty speed. Many UGA fans liken him to current UGA WR Kris Durham and for good reason. Both have showcased great hands, but have good speed as well to boot.
Baker just visited UGA today and realized shortly thereafter that Athens was the place for him to be. Baker is a little smallish for a linebacker at 6'0" and just over 200 lbs. but his physical style of play and quick speed (4.45 forty) should allow him to find a spot at UGA without a problem. While he isn't the true tackler of someone like Rennie Curran, he still has a knack for finding the football and with added coaching on his technique, he could become a punishing run stopper.
UGA hosted many potential recruits over the past few days and they got three commitments out of it. With an increasing trend of recruits graduating early and enrolling in college early, UGA could be getting more commitments in the coming months. When that happens, we'll be one of the first to bring you all the news.
