In a two part interview with Oprah Winfrey this past Monday, Whitney Houston openly admits to her drug addiction which she previously denied when Diane Sawyer asked her in a 2002 interview. This is a huge step forward in her career and it speaks volumes to those in the African American Community who still struggle with this disease. In recent months the internet has been flooded with words of outrage, sadness and support for actress Maia Campbell who was seen on camera clearly under the influence of a controlled substance on a local street. Some men in the neighborhood she was spotted in decided that it would be amusing to poke fun at her unfortunate situation.
Campbell, who suffers schizophrenia, is best known for starring in the 90’s television show “In the House” with LL Cool J and Debbie Allen and is also the daughter of the late Bebe Moore Campbell, who wrote a book entitled “72 Hour Hold” in 2005, which loosely tells the story about her daughters struggle with mental illness.
When Whitney made the conscious decision to talk about her issues with substance abuse, it opened up a whole new dialogue for the black community to start addressing it in their homes and lives. Let’s hope this is a giant step forward on the road to recovery for many more of our brothers and sisters. Well done Whitney!
