Mack guard Will Cherry is a big reason the Oakland
powerhouse has a 45 game winning streak.

When it comes to high school sports the only thing more exciting than a Section or state championship is a winning streak.

De La Salle's legendary football winning streak is something to behold for eternity to be certain but we've got an impressive one brewing here in Oakland.

McClymonds (13-0) boys basketball team has erupted into 2009 with a choppy but dominant win over Fairfield 66-45. The Warriors were wrapping up a week in which they had played seven games, including a tournament win in Clovis.

Mack doesn't start the brutal Oakland Athletic League for a couple more weeks, leaving ample opportunity for more W's. They'll face Hogan (Vallejo) and Jesuit (Sacramento) before opening league play against Oakland high.

To see McClymonds undefeated is no surprise. After all, they're among the elite in the country's strongest high school basketball state. They're looking to repeat as California state champions in March and have a strong, deep team.

In face, their last loss came in the 2007 playoffs and they're coming off a perfect 32-0 season that culminated in a win over Dominguez to win state 73-54.

That playoff run included a win over De La Salle in the NorCal finals. These two teams will stage a big rematch on January 19th at Haas Pavillion in Berkeley which promises to be the biggest non-league game of the year.

The Spartans (9-1) of Concord are off to a typically strong start, with just a four-point loss to Oakland Tech (OAL) on the negative side of the ledger.
