A visit to the Philadelphia Zoo is a great option for families. The Zoo is celebrating an impressive milestone – its 150th anniversary. Many families have told me the zoo is never the same place twice, even for families who have been there many times. I visited the zoo last week with my two children and they both especially enjoyed the GEICO Gecko Exhibit which is at the zoo through August. This educational exhibit features a naturalistic habitat for its colony of giant day geckos, one of a unique group of lizards native to Madagascar and the Indian Ocean islands. The GEICO Gecko Exhibit also features lush tropical plants, trickling water, interpretive kiosks and interactive activities for guests of all ages.
Visitors can enjoy an up-close and personal look at reptiles and amphibians from all over the world and learn about how the Zoo’s Conservation Biologist, Carlos Martinez Rivera, Ph.D., is on a mission to save endangered frogs. The Philadelphia Zoo is open seven-days-a-week from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $18 for adults, $15 for children 2 – 11 and free for children under 2.
As I mentioned, Philadelphia Zoo, America's first zoo, is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding. Chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 21, 1859, the Zoo is currently home to over 1,300 animals from around the world, many rare and endangered. Welcoming more than one million visitors each year from throughout the region and beyond, the Zoo serves children and families as a unique and engaging public resource for wildlife conservation and education.
