DVR’s have become ubiquous in the homes, and are offered by every satellite and cable service. Most of them now offer the ability to control recording via the Internet – a great feature for when you are away from home and suddenly realize you want to record something.
Placeshifting adds the ability to watch the shows recorded on your DVR via the Internet, and at CES today EchoStar introduced what they claim to be the world’s first Placeshifting HD DVR in the Echostar 922 DVR. This video on demand capability (assuming it works) would trump Tivo’s Tivo-to-go that allows you to download videos to mobile devices and computers. Why the doubt? Most home broadband networks have much slower upload speeds than download speeds – so how well the system can truly provide HD video on demand remains to be seen.
