Popular Japanese manga One Piece, by artist Eiichiro Oda, will be running 2.85 million copies during the first printing of the 56th volume of the series. This, the manga’s publisher Shueisha claims, is a new record, at least in Japan.
One Piece Vol. 56, which will officially go on sale on December 4th in Japan, will eclipse the previous record for first print runs of 2.63 million copies set by both One Piece Vol. 27 and Vol. 55, according to Seikei News. One Piece reportedly has approximately 176 million total copies of its books in circulation.
To help celebrate the new publishing record, Shueisha will be giving away in Japan 5,000 sets of “treasure coins” featuring the nine main characters of the story.
One Piece will also be premiering its 10th feature film, “Strong World,” on December 12th. Oda is an executive producer on the movie, the Mainichi reported.
One Piece, which is serialized in the popular “Weekly Shonen Jump” manga magazine, has been running since 1997. The manga is sold in over 25 countries and regions around the world, according to sanspo.com. Vol. 56, entitled “arigato” (Thanks), will continue the current story arc of the series’ main character, Luffy, trying to rescue his brother, Ace, from public execution at the hands of the World Government.
