Quentin Tarantino has become “Uncle Tara-chan” in the popular “White family” Japanese SoftBank commercial series. It was revealed at a SoftBank press conference on November 10th that Tarantino has acted in an undisclosed number of commercials to be aired within the next few months for the mobile giant.
The cute, but rather bizarre, commercial series revolves around a Japanese family of four named The White’s. The series, which reportedly started in 2007, has for main characters: “Me” (a Softbank shop saleswoman played by popular singer/actress Aya Ueto), “Dad” (played by a ‘talking’ dog), “Mom”, and Older Brother (played by African American actor Dante Carter).
Tarantino joins the White family as the samurai-loving Uncle Tara-chan. He is seen in one commercial interacting with the White family while wearing a black Japanese kimono.
Although Tarantino was not present at the press conference on the 10th, Ueto and Cater introduced the new character and screened outtake clips. Ueto said that Tarantino “was very energetic and did a lot of adlibbing.” She also said working with him was “truly interesting.”
The press conference was in promotion of SoftBank’s winter cell phone selection and their new Wi-Fi service.
Tarantino was in Japan around November 4th for the Japanese premiere of his film Inglourious Basterds, which starts in country on November 20th.
A video clip of the commercial will be posted here as soon as it is available.
