T-Pain "Thr33 Ringz" album review
T-Pain’s album is full of two essential things; features and funny skits. The skits are what really saved this album from being a complete and utter train wreck and even those went a bit too far. T-Pain had a total of 15 features from artist ranging from Kanye West to Mary J. Blige on a 23 track album. I honestly forgot who’s album I was listening to for a moment because I was so overwhelmed with featured artists.
“Chopped N Skrewed” which is a song about being played and used was of course full of Auto-Tunes, T-Pain’s favorite tool; hey, that rhymes! I think that this song has become my guilty pleasure. It’s that song that I admittedly listen to privately and I secretly enjoy it. I like the lyrics and the beat. It reminds me of beats from the 90’s during the time when R&B super-groups Jodeci and Shai reigned supreme. Ludacris as usual adds character and pizzazz to the track.
“Freeze” which featured
Chris Brown caught my attention immediately upon play. The beat is captivating but the over-use of Auto-Tunes once again, drove me practically insane. However,
T-Pain does a great job at riding the track like a yacht in San Tropez. The beat-boxing on the track takes away from the essence of the song but the beat does a great job at distracting us from really listening to the lyrics.
“Can’t Believe It” which features
LiL Wayne is one of my favorites on the album minus
Lil Wayne.
Lil Wayne’s lyrics are weak, in fact, I am willing to pay big bucks to anyone that can decipher what he is saying in this song; seriously, what is he saying? “Therapy” which features
Kanye West is a very interesting song which happens to be about masturbation.
T-Pain sings “1, 2, 3, 4 you can get up out my door/ 5, 6, 7, 8, I don’t need your sex I’ll masturbate...” Yea, I think he likes nursery rhymes.
“It Ain’t Me” which features
T.I. and
Akon is a track dedicated to women who freeload off of their men.
T.I. speaks about not being that guy who would spend on a girl frivolously. I’m confused; I thought I could have whatever I like?! I guess not.
“Long Lap Dance” reminded me of the days of “I’m In Love With A Stripper” from his first album Rappa Ternt Sanga (2005).In the song he speaks about, well a stripper. He sings “I need a two-for-one or something/ otherwise I need my own, long lap dance…” I think it is safe to conclude that he has quite the obsession with strippers.
The song “Karaoke” featuring
DJ Khaled was the straw that broke the camels back for me.
DJ Khaled did a remarkable job at screaming from the beginning to the end of the track; by this time I was reaching for an ibuprofen to relieve my now pounding headache. Thanks
Khaled!
Although there were songs on this album that I liked and found myself jamming to such as “Freeze” and “Blowing Up”, and songs I thought held a lot of meaning and put forth a positive message such as “Change” that features
Mary J. Bilge,
Diddy, and
Akon; a lot of the songs sound too much a like. There wasn’t enough variety in the album. The beats weren’t that much different and the album was bombarded with features. I was hoping to get a little more insight into the artist known as
T-Pain instead I got a compilation CD. All of the songs on his album are definitely club-play worthy but none are very memorable.
Once artist understand the art of making an album and hold their fans interests at hand and learn to break their obsession with putting out singles just to stay relevant and to make a quick buck, then we won’t have to search and buy only singles and actually anticipate and purchase albums; when will they ever learn?
On a scale of 1-5, I give this album 2 ½ Examiner globes.
Check it out for yourself and tell me if you agree. Click
