Plies is Vibe’s cover boy for the month of December, how exciting and festive. I was a little shocked that he would be selected for the cover. Not too long ago a little scandal where there were accusations made by Robin Thicke that Vibe wouldn’t put him on the cover because he was white were swirling around. Their response to his allegations were that they only had well established artists appear on their covers. Seeing as though Plies isn’t that “well established” I guess they decided to drop that requirement.
Every time I hear Plies rap I always feel like I’m not suppose to be listening to him. It kind of reminds me of when Color Me Badd song “I Wanna Sex You Up” came out and I was just a little mini and I would secretly listen to these very freaky songs, but I digress. The only difference here is that Plies is not one of my favorite rappers; he just makes me feel so dirty when I listen to him.
However, I do have to give him props. I caught an interview he did on The Ed Lover Show on Power 105.1 a few weeks back where he was giving thanks and appreciation for being in his current position and status. A lot of rappers have this really bad habit where once they become rich and successful their gratefulness and humbleness goes flying out the door and it is quickly replaced with cockiness. Plies stands apart from them.
Now I don’t agree with Vibe’s title for Plies. It states “Yessir! Plies is the future of rap”; and I ask, what is going on with everyone wanting to be the future of rap when they’re really not that good? Lil Wayne claims to be “the best rapper alive” but likes to mumble through verses and now Plies is the future of rap! If said statement is true then we have a lot more work to do hip-hop because the future is looking mighty bleak. Plies must be doing something right; he did sell 200,000 copies of his sophomore album Definition Of Real in its first week, so kudos to him. Make sure to pick up the new copy of Vibe when it hits stands this month. Check out his interview with Vibe below. Enjoy :o).
