John Sotter "Acoustic Warrior" is a singer-songwriter from San Clemente. Now, I know what you're thinking. Singer-songwriter? You mean some guy that sits on a stool and strums an acoustic guitar while singing songs about his ex-girlfriends? Well, you're partially right. John Sotter does play an acoustic guitar. As he states in the liner notes of his album Alone, "Acoustic guitars are just more fun, cuz they can do it anywhere."
However, if you are looking for a sullen singer who sits on a stool brooding about how miserable life is, you'll need to look elsewhere. When Sotter plays live, he gears up with his guitar and harmonica and stomps all over the stage as he sings songs not only about relationships, but surfing, and generally enjoying an outdoor life. You see, John Sotter is not a guy who has developed his chops in coffeehouses or some kind of nouveau-beatnik scene. This is a guy whose songs are born from traveling all over the world, "playing for beer and dinner." You know those guys in movies and books who set out to travel the world with nothing more than a wandering spirit, a backpack of clothes, and a guitar? John Sotter really is one of those guys.
So, what's the story behind the title "Acoustic Warrior?" "I call myself Acoustic Warrior because that's what I feel I am. I'm a self-taught solo peformer fighting against over-population, environmental destruction, imitative artistry, and dull living." All of those messages come through loud and clear on Sotter's upcoming release Alone. You can hear samples of the upcoming album at his Acoustic Warrior site. If you are looking to buy a copy of the new album, it will be available at The Coach House on 30 January when he opens for The Mother Hips.
