Since Americans abroad has been such an astounding hit - another clean sheet from Tim Howard - let's shift gears and look at Matchday 2 in the UEFA Champions League.
The biggest surprise of Matchday 2 was Zurich's stunning 1-0 win at AC Milan. The goal from Hannu Tihinen in the 10th minute was pure class, and Zurich keeper Johnny Leoni produced a fantastic save on Filippo Inzaghi to preserve a famous win for the minnows from Switzerland. Milan need to take a long look at themselves. Sure, they lost Kaka, but they still have several high-quality players (sound familiar, Manchester United?). The only problem with that group is we're in 2009 and Ronaldinho peaked in 2006, Clarence Seedorf is 60 years old, the backline is creaky, and several players haven't lived up to the hype (this part sounds nothing like United). They sit 11th - behind Lazio on goal difference and just a point ahead of Bari, a newly-promoted side - in a crummy league that typically plays in front of half-empty stadiums and is falling apart financially. Otherwise, things are great in Milan and Italy as a whole!
But in positive news, at least for Americans, Oguchi Onyewu made his first official appearance for Milan, coming on in the second half for Alessandro Nesta. So Milan have that going for them, which is nice.
Liverpool also lost, going down to Fiorentina in Florence, 2-0. Two first half strikes from Stevan Jovetic left the Reds in third in their group behind Fiorentina and Lyon.
Chelsea, coming off their stunning loss to Wigan over the weekend, edged past Apoel Nicosia 1-0 behind a strike from Nicolas Anelka. The win in Cyprus gives Chelsea maximum points through two matches.
Manchester United needed a second half comeback to beat defending German champions Wolfsburg, 2-1, at a damp Old Trafford. Ryan Giggs equalized a Edin Dzeko header before Michael Carrick secured the three points for United as they moved to the top of Group B. Gigg's goal, a deflected free kick, was his 150th all-time for United.
Real Madrid continued their strong play with a 3-0 win over Marseille in Madrid. Mr. Spray-On Tan Ronaldo netted a brace for the Whites as they look to win their 10th European title, with the final being played in Madrid next May.
