
While the summer looks dismal for new productions, September and October are bursting with anticipation.
First up, is Princess Leia whose landing on Broadway with the premiere of Wishful Drinking, created and performed by Carrie Fisher and directed by Tony Taccone at Studio 54 on Broadway (254West 54th St). Beginning previews on Tuesday, September 22nd this is a limited engagement through January 3rd, 2010. Wishful Drinking, has Carrie recounting the true and intoxicating tale of her life as a Hollywood legend, told with the same wry wit she poured into bestsellers like Postcards from the Edge. The daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher became a cultural icon when she starred as Princess Leia? in the first Star Wars trilogy at 19 years old. Forever changed, Carrie's life did not stay picture perfect. Fisher is the life of the party in this uproarious and sobering look at her Hollywood hangover.
Slated for Manhattan Theater Club the New York Premiere of Donald Margulies Time Stands Still. Are we supposed to deny ourselves ordinary happiness because there's misery in the world? This is one of many questions Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies poses in his intelligent and timely new play. James and Sarah, a journalist and a photographer, have been together for nine years and share a passion for documenting the realities of war. But when injuries force them to return home to New York, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life. A important new work about responsibility to ourselves,to our loved ones, to our community, and to our world. Previews begin Thursday, October 15th.
MTC is also bringing The Royal Family. This is the classic comedy of theatrical manners, written by two of the theatre's greatest writers, George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, whose other storied collaborations include Dinner at Eight and Stage Door. This devilishly funny play follows the Cavendishes, the famous family of stage stars, as they go about the drama of the day: choosing scripts, dashing off to a performance, and stealing kisses with handsome beaus. Directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (Doubt) with a fantastic cast that includes Emmy nominee Stephen Collins as Gilbert Marshall,?Tony winner John Glover as ?Herbert Dean,?Tony Award winner and Oscar nominee Rosemary Harris as Fanny Cavendish, Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk Award winner Jan Maxwell as Julie Cavendish,?Tony nominee Tony Roberts as Oscar Wolfe,?and Drama Desk Award nominee Reg Rogers as Tony Cavendish. The Roundabout Theatre Company presents Sienna Miller in the American Premiere After Miss Julie, directed by Mark Brokaw. Additional cast members and the design team will be announced shortly. After Miss Julie transposes August Strindberg's 1888 play about sex and class to an English country house on the eve of Labour's historic landslide in 1945. Previews entice starting September 18th.
