Warning screen for overheating iPhones

In response to the overwhelming concern from iPhone 3GS users regarding the phone overheating, Apple has posted a support page on its website.

Apple suggests to only use iPhone 3G and 3GS in temperatures between -4 degrees and 113 degrees Farenheight (-20 to 45 degrees Celcius). In the warmer seasons, Apple warns you to not leave your iPhone in the car where the temperature could exceed the maxium safe temperature in a matter of minutes.

Apple posted an image of a screen you can expect to see if your iPhone starts to overheat (see image to the right).

The company says if the interior of the iPhone exceeds safe operating temperatures, the phone will attempt to regulate temperature by doing any or all of the following:

  • stopping mid-charge
  • dimming its display
  • weaking the signal strenght
  • displaying the warning screen

Apple says the following activities and conditions may cause the phone to overheat:

  • leaving the device in a car on a hot day
  • leaving the phone in direct sunlight for an extended period
  • using certain apps (like GPS) in hot conditions

One white iPhone 3GS user reported that his phone started turning brown due to overheating. Currently there is only one case of this type of malfunction, and most likely it is an isolated incident; however, if you are experiencing any similar issues due to overheating, make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar to speak with a store representative. The appointment is free and your iPhone is under warranty for one year from the date of purchase so the issue should be resolved on the spot, hassle free.
