President George W. Bush addressing the United Nations.

What is the New World Order? If we are to believe what we are told then imagine a utopia where the average man can twiddle away his time knowing that the enlightened elite will see to his every need. It is a global empire that unites men under a common banner. It is touted as a world state where by the divisive ideas of nationality, creed, religion, and culture no longer divide one individual from the other. Within this order lay the foundation of a new era without discrimination, unemployment, or war. It will become a global society where we will yield both our individuality as well as our sovereignty for the benefit of peace and prosperity for everyone. Truly, the coming utopia is a manifestation of Eden as it was intend to be.

Many people suggest that the idea of a one world government is merely the passive aggressive speculation of those who considered themselves as either militantly antigovernment or Christian fundamentalists. It is a conspiracy theory referring to a totalitarian government designed to create and enforce international law. And while it may be contributed to idol fancy, consider such unions as the World Trade Organization, the North American Free Trade Agreement, the European Union, and the United Nations. Is it difficult to understand why some may have reason to be concerned?

With the ever increasing risk of destroying ourselves either through war, over population, climate change, and social economic variances, the push for a One World Order appears as though it is gaining speed. Couple this with the rise of industry across the world and the subsequent usage of fossil fuels to feed their growth, the last 200 years has seen an increase of deforestation and gas emissions from the burning of coal and oil. However, environmental issues are often left on the back burn of public consciousness when faced with economic growth and job preservation.

Don’t forget the nearly 963 million people across the world that are hungry or the 16,000 children who die each day from hunger related issues, which brings an emphasis to the necessity of global awareness for these conditions plaguing innocent victims around the world. In a planet of nearly 6.7 billion people, the needs of a few are greatly diminished. Especially when considering that America, combined with 65 other countries considered to be prosperous, only makes up a sixth of the world’s population. Do we dare continue to look at the rest of mankind with a blind eye while we digest our wealth?

In his book, "The New World Order" H.G. Wells writes, "The first thing, therefore that has to be done in thinking out the primary problems of world peace is to realise this, that we are living in the end of a definite period of history, the period of the sovereign states. As we used to say in the eighties with ever-increasing truth: "We are in an age of transition". Now we get some measure of the acuteness of the transition. It is a phase of human life which may lead, as I am trying to show, either to a new way of living for our species or else to a longer or briefer dégringolade of violence, misery, destruction, death and the extinction of mankind. These are not rhetorical phrases I am using here; I mean exactly what I say, the disastrous extinction of mankind." He continues by saying, "The new power organisations are destroying the forests of the world at headlong speed, ploughing great grazing areas into deserts, exhausting mineral resources, killing off whales, seals and a multitude of rare and beautiful species, destroying the morale of every social type and devastating the planet."

Many key leaders have shared their thoughts about the idea of a New World Order as well.

"All of us will ultimately be judged on the effort we have contributed to building a New World Order."--Robert Kennedy, former U.S. Attorney-General, 1967.

"Fundamental Bible-believing people do not have the right to indoctrinate their children in their religious beliefs because we, the state, are preparing them for the year 2000, when America will be part of a one-world global society and their children will not fit in." --Nebraska State Senator Peter Hoagland, speaking on radio in 1983.

"Further global progress is now possible only through a quest for universal consensus in the movement towards a new world order." -- Mikhail Gorbachev, in an address at the United Nations (December 1988)

"If we do not follow the dictates of our inner moral compass and stand up for human life, then his lawlessness will threaten the peace and democracy of the emerging new world order we now see, this long dreamed-of vision we've all worked toward for so long." -- President George Bush (January 1991)

"We need a global New Deal -- a grand bargain between the countries and continents of this world" -- Gordon Brown, speaking to the G20 summit (February 2009)

It would seem that if we are left to our own greediness, mankind will eventually bring about his own demise. And it is obvious that our national, as well as international, leaders are calling for these changes in the hope of sparing us from the coming destruction. However, are we really in such dire need as to willingly absolve our sovereignty, hand over our freedoms, and embrace the ideas of a utopia? What is truly fueling the push for a global society and does that push have an impact on our faith as well? To answer this question we must first recognize the biblical significance of a one world society and to help us do that we will take a look at a dream.

Troubled and unable to sleep, King Nebuchadnezzar summoned his magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and sorceress. Considered to be the wisest of the kingdom, Nebuchadnezzar demand an explanation of a dream he had had. However, there was a catch. Not only did they have to interpret his dream, but they also had to tell him what it was about. Pleading for their lives they begged the king to tell them his dream so they could interpret it, but this tried the king’s patience and he ordered the death of all the wise men in Babylon. As the guards came to carry out the king’s decree, Daniel, a wise man, went to the king to give him an answer.

Declaring that all understanding was given to him by God, Daniel explained that the king had seen an image of a man whose head was of gold, his chest and arms were of silver, his belly and thighs were of bronze, and his legs were of iron. However, the feet of the statue were made partly from iron, but also of baked clay. A rock that could not be formed with human hands was hurled at the statue striking the feet and smashing them. Then there arose a wind that swept away the broken pieces leaving nothing behind except for the rock which grew into a mountain filling the whole earth.

Then Daniel began to explain the dream. He told the king that he was the head of gold, King Nebuchadnezzar, who ruled over Babylon as well as the known world. However, Babylon would fall to King Cyrus who commanded the armies of the Medes and Persians, thus he explained the statue’s arms and chest made of silver. Moreover, a third kingdom of brass would arise. In only 8 short years of conquest, Alexander the Great fulfilled this part of the dream and ruled the known world of his time. Following Alexander was Rome who ruled the world with an iron fist. It was also the iron nails of Rome that pierced the hands and feet of Christ. And what of the feet made with both iron and clay? Daniel explained that Rome would not be replaced by a fifth kingdom, but rather the world would be divided into ten different parts. Daniel’s prophecy also predicted that these ten rulers would try to weld themselves together, but that God would establish His kingdom and that His kingdom would consume all kingdoms forever.

One of the foundational truths of Christianity is the triumphant return of Jesus Christ, which is either preceded by or accompanied by the formation of a one world government. In light of the struggles in the Middle East, the plight of Christians around the world, and the growing apathy towards Christianity in general, the idea of a one world government signals an end to the hostilities and anguish for many. For others who do not share the Christian faith, the idea of a one world government presents the end to diversity, segregation, and isolation. As an idea that has both sides of the isle looking closely at the possibility, a New World Government has become the catch phrase for this generation and one that deserves a closer inspection. Please join me for a four part look into the coming of A New World Order.
