The 2009 Nike Women's Marathon brought over 20,000 women together for a challenge and a cause this Sunday October 18, 2009. With 26.2 miles ahead of them, the females faced their fears and in doing so, raised over $14million for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Similar to the scenic route of the Boston Marathon, the 2009 Nike Women's Marathon stretched far and wide, from the city to the sea. The gun went off Downtown, but runners had scenery to stare at as they trekked past the Presidio, the Golden Gate Bridge and crossed the line along the Pacific-rimmed Great Highway.
Results show Californian Caitlin Smith finishing first in a time of 2:52:52, but women from 25 countries and all 50 states crossed the line behind her. Olympian and 1979 Boston Marathon winner Joan Benoit Samuelson and Olympian and 2009 Boston Marathon 3rd place finisher Kara Goucher congratulated Caitlin on her win--definitely some incentive to tackle those notorious San Francisco hills!
