St. Jude's Ranch for Children

Every year I take out the Christmas decorations the day after Thanksgiving. Tucked neatly into one of the boxes I will find last year's Christmas cards, tied neatly with satin ribbon. I don't know what to do with them, but I am too sentimental to throw them out. So I put them in a box full of cards from previous years, and place the box back in the garage, along with old, broken, homemade ornaments that I still hold onto.

I always knew I would find a good use for them one day, and now I have.

St. Jude's Ranch for Children is accepting used, Christmas or all-occasion greeting cards from November 15, 2009 thru February 28, 2010. (The dates on the website have yet to be updated to reflect the current year; the current news release announces the program is ongoing.)

St. Jude's Ranch for Children has a 40 year history of healing and caring for abused, abandoned and neglected children. Founded in 1967 by Father Jack Adam, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children opened its doors to a single child in need of love and care. Since that first child, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children provided healing and nurturing for more than 1,000 children.St. Jude's Ranch for Children has three campuses in Nevada and Texas.

Over thirty years ago, members of the ranch turned the previous year’s Christmas cards into "new" cards to give as thank you cards to its donors for the coming season. The recipients were so delighted that they requested the children sell them the special cards. That is how the St. Jude’s Ranch Recycled Card Program was born. Since then, the Program expanded to include all occasion greeting cards…just about anything that starts with a used greeting card front.  The program currently receives over a million cards per year from all over the world.

The children participate in making the new recycled cards by removing the front and attaching a new back made with recycled paper. The new card is a beautiful, “green” card made by the children and volunteers. The benefits are two-fold: customers receive "green" holiday cards for use and the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and importance of "going green".
