Team17, the minds behind Worms 2: Armageddon have announced a remake of a very old Amiga game called Alien Breed, entitled Alien Breed Evolution. The original game, set in an Aliens-inspired space station, called for the player to scour the station, looking for either a lift or an object to interact with. The game featured a single player or intense co-op mode, and challenged players with a horde of enemies, all intent on killing the player.
With limited resources and a lack of character toughness, the game required wits and alacrity to safely navigate each level, assailed by seemingly endless Alien hordes, searching for extra credits, lives, or health packs to make it to the end of each level. In a way, the game is similar to Gauntlet and requires many of the same skills. Upgrades and money are much easier to find, thanks to the Intex mainframe system, allowing a player to purchase what they are after with found credits. Initial screenshots make the game look very pleasant and engaging, maintaining the panic that makes the game so very enjoyable.
There is, as always, room for some improvement above the original. A way to upgrade the player's damage resistance is certainly desirable, and a greater variety in enemies, specifically in how they attack would add excitement to the game. Additionally, and this may be hoping for too much, adding a system that allows the aliens to hear players speaking and track them would serve to immerse the player even further. Again, that may be hoping for too much. Regardless, disappointment seems unlikely for this title.
