George Lopez's highly-anticipated late-night chat fest finally arrived. But was it worth the wait? True, Lopez Tonight (11pm TBS) has already generated mixed reviews, but let's not sign off on Mr. Lopez yet after just one outing.
In front of what had to be one of the most festive studio audiences TV have seen since Arsenio Hall dominated late-night, Lopez came off across more excited and anxious than centered and refined. Ellen DeGeneres was on hand—in pajamas. Later, Eva Longoria Parker—a longtime friend of Lopez—entered the party and was asked to pole dance. (It did not go over well.) When hotshot Kobe Bryant made an appearance, Lopez gushed and there was talk of Twitter. Gifts were also exchanged—Bryant received a golf puter. In between, there were gags, one that probed audience members on whether "minorities" really live up to their stereotypes.
Clearly, the best part of the evening was the arrival of the night's musical guest, Carlos Santana. The man sizzled musically.
So, what's the prognosis? It's pretty standard that talk show audieneces are supposed to be amped, but one can't help but wonder if the gang in Lopez's creative tent were served ample portions of Red Bull. The energy was high—but was it real?
Long before the show debuted, Lopez noted in an interview: "I don't feel like it (a late-night venture) is that big a risk other than just wanting to do good, have an incredible band led by Michael Bearden [the musical director of Michael Jackson's This Is It doc]."
Wanting to good is a good thing, so it may be fair to suggest accentuating more of what actually was good on the debut of Lopez Tonight and work from there. If the famous Lantino comic and former sitcom star can lure in stellar musical acts, great. From there, it might be wise to keep in mind that not every outing has to feel like fraternity party. Lopez is already likeable, if not embraceable.
That's enough reason to celebrate.
