There's one good thing about San Francisco television audiences: they never seem to tire welcoming a show based in The City. So, when ABC's engaging Eli Stone unraveled last season, there was plenty to cheer about.
But how much of the show was actually filmed here?
Not much. At least back then. This year, it's another story. After the writer's strike, producers of the show took the streets—literally. If you happened to catch the first few episodes this season, you may already have noticed that the many key exterior scenes with series' star Jonny Lee Miller were filmed all around town. (Was that Golden Gate park we saw last week?)
This can only bode well for the show, which enters its pivotal sophomore season. For those who have yet to tune in, the series chronicles an SF lawyer whose curious visions force him to re-examine his life and do some good in the world. Miller is well-cast here and the writers seem to have a clear grasp where to take Eli this time around--last year's brain tumor story arc suggested that our hero's visions may have had more to do with an illness than the Almighty. (Joan of Arcadia anyone?)
More good news: the recent guest stint by Katie Holmes seemed heaven-sent. Expect Holmes to pop up later this season in what could be a real romance for Eli.
In the meantime, Tuesday night's episode finds Eli pursuing a case against lead paint manufacturers which could lead him to the Supreme Court. It's not all smooth sailing, though. Jordan's (Victor Garber) sanity is questioned and the entire law firm seems to be in a state of disarray. Watch how well Garber handles his character's dismantling here and expect a big blowout between his character and Eli.
The series isn't the first to spotlight The City in recent years. Last season, everybody had high hopes for NBC's time-traveling charade, Journeyman, which filmed extensively downtown. The show tanked, but then came ... Women's Murder Club ABC), another drama based in San Francisco and one of the most promising, well-rated outings unleashed last year. (Truth be told, it's hard not to forgive ABC for letting that one go.)
For now, Eli appears to be blessed. With a timeslot right after Dancing With the Stars, it's hard not to be.
Speaking of Dancing ... will Susan Lucci every loosen up?
