Steve McNair did not get to play in Houston for long. We never got to see him at his best until he became a Tennessee Titan.
But when the Oilers moved to Tennessee, perhaps the greatest loss for Houston fans was the chance to see McNair and Eddie George develop into legitimate superstars, players who would take the team to its only Super Bowl.
Details are still sketchy, but McNair was found dead Saturday in a Tennessee apartment complex.

We don't know the details, so it would be irresponsible to speculate or deal with the circumstances until we know everything.
But McNair the football player was a joy to watch. He was a warrior on the field who often took a beating. He was tough, and led the franchise to its highest perch.
He was one Kevin Dyson arm stretch from taking the Rams to overtime in the Super Bowl.
His throwing arm was always strong, but he went from an undisclipined, throw-it-deep-or-take-off running QB early in his career to a complete pocker passer. He lifted the Titans to heights the franchise had never seen.
He was a true leader on the field, a player who was as good as any when he was at his best.
There has never been anyone as tough or strong play the quarterback position.
It was a shame that injuries slowed him down. He was only 36 when he was found dead, an age where many players are still on the field. The player who limped on the field for the Ravens at the end of his career was nothing like the Air McNair we saw for years.
The fan in all of us will miss that player. He will forever be remembered as a Titan, and those of us in Houston will always lament what might have been.
Today, the fan in all of us is shocked and sad.
