10 dumplings per order for only $5.50

When you name your restaurant Shanghai Dumpling King, you are setting very high expectations for your signature dish. Thankfully they do not disappoint, as Shanghai Dumpling King serves some of the best xiao long bao (Shanghai dumplings) I've had. With so many Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, both high-end and hole-in-the-wall, the choices for Shanghai dumplings are near limitless. Shanghai Dumpling King is a family owned hole-in-the-wall restaurant that strikes a perfect balance between authenticity, quality, and price.

The dumplings are filled with meat and a soupy broth, which is characteristic of authentic Shanghai dumplings. They are then wrapped in a thin, smooth, and semi-translucent skin, then steamed to perfection in a traditional steaming basket. The texture and consistency are perfect, as they are very delicate. The real challenge is trying to eat them slow enough with chopsticks without breaking them and losing the precious soup! The flavors are sweet, salty, and savory, with just a hint of ginger to give it a nice finish.

An order of 10 dumplings is only $5.50, but it's hard not to finish them in seconds! They are relatively cheap compared to many other places, and with the quality of dumplings served here, the value is even greater. For instance, at popular and expensive dim sum restaurant Yank Sing, the same order of Shanghai dumplings is $10! Yank Sing is very good, but also very expensive. I would choose good food at half the price every time.

Shanghai Dumpling King is located at 35th and Balboa in the Outer Richmond. Look for the red overhang that says (obviously) Shanghai Dumpling King, it's impossible to miss.
