Diverse and creative designs of apparels and accessories for all tastes and ages are now available at Made in Hawaii exhibition at Blaisdell Center through this Sunday (8/23).
A lot of the designers focus on T-shirts, whereas quite a few make dresses, shirts and jewelry. Walking in the spacious and crowded exhibition hall, I was taken by the huge creative energy rooted on the land of Hawaii.
T-shirts
Downtown General Store uses intriguing Asian culture symbols such as Chinese zodiac and Japanese Katakana, and local expressions such as cho cho lips. Its Mah Jong tee (featured in the slideshow), which presents the significant cultural activity in Aisa, will win the hearts of Mah Jong fans.
Hawaiian Force from Hilo promotes native Hawaiian values and political ideas through its words, such as "sustainability" wherein "aina" means land. "10 Do's for mainlanders" tee has some smart and stringent advice for tourists.
Local Guy Z, as featured in the photo above, has story-telling cartoon tees about local concerns. The brand considers itself as "purveyors of local cultures." I saw customers connected with the humor and contents on the tees.
Tatoo Clothing has eye-cathing tatoo-inspired tees. The three color design featured in the slideshow is said to be old Hawaiian flag. Like body tatoo, the complicated and decorative lines and shapes of the prints carry ancient meanings.
It's About Time! has moisture wicking tees that are very functional in the tropical environment. Its fabric of specially woven polyester enables the evaporation of sweat from the skin quickly.
808 All Day from Maui has flashy logo tees in black and yellow.
Little Dragon Girls has vivid Chinese cultural symbols expressed in a chic and sassy girl image, such as the Feng Shui girl sitting on the globe, featured in the slideshow.
Janimals has many cute cartoon girl and boy tees spiced with humorous words.
Men's Shirts
KI Design focuses on understated Aloha Shirts in imported Japanese textile, some imitating ikat print. It provides the alternative choice for men looking for print shirts in more subtle colors and patterns.
Women's Dresses and Tops
Lisa Maru, Parson graduate, started her brand more than twenty years ago. She specializes in generous sized muumuus and dresses in vibrant colors trimmed with square appliques. I enjoy her color sense and appreciate her devotion for underserved customers in bigger sizes.
Jewelries
Malou Whitmore makes statement necklaces, bringing garden to the neck. Its daring shapes and exaggeraged sizes plus nature-inspired colors are unique and impressive. Among many jewelry vendors in the event, her design and display really stand out.
Chachkies by Rebecca shows a large and ecclectic collection of necklaces in all kinds of colors, beads, shapes and sizes. The majority are more on the chunky side. They must be fun to wear in the sun.
