An eye-opening exhibition for all lovers of fashion and style. Informative, inclusive, and inspriing, the Ala Moana Shopping Center and Hawaii Fashion Incubator co-sponsored event features time-honored pieces selected from a vast collection at the UH Costume Collection housed by the Apparel Product Design and Merchandising program and curatored by Carol D'Angelo.
I feel enchanted and humbled by the creativity and craftsmanship shown in the pieces, many older than me. One can find so many rarities such as lame and taffeta fabrics, kaftan and mini styles, sequined, laced and pin-tucked details.
In fact, I will go a second and third time to take more fine details in. Each piece deserves an article to decribe their beauty and significance in costume history. Please take a look at some of the sublime dresses in the slideshow below. I strongly encourage you to go to the exhibition. There you may gain new insights to today's fashion trends. Indeed, I feel everything we see in fashion today has happened before, except for innovations in textile.
The UH Costume Collection has the largest Asian and Hawaiian costume collections in the US as well as impressive Western and Ethnic collections. This exhibition to celebrate fashion in the past fifty years as well as the fifty years' anniversary of Ala Moana Shopping Center gives the public the best access ever to this incredible collection. Seize the opportunity and submerge in the river of history with the gorgeous garments.
Location: On the third floor, right next door to the entrance to Nordstrom.
