As the economy continues to struggle and unemployment rises, many Americans who dream of becoming published writers are concentrating more heavily on jobs that pay the bills than on work they enjoy.
Writers struggling to find the time and money to perfect their craft, however, can turn to organizations like The Writer's Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Not only do these organizations offer affordable workshops and venues for mingling with fellow writers, but they are now beginning to pony up financial resources for cash-strapped writers.
The Writer's Center recently unveiled the Undiscovered Voices Fellowship for writers earning less than $25,000 per year. Candidates chosen for the fellowship will receive up to 8 complimentary workshops over a 12-month period to help them complete or nearly complete a manuscript.
Candidates are asked to submit samples of their work, a cover letter stating that they meet the eligibility requirements, and two references.
Kyle Semmel, publications and communications manager for The Writer' Center, notes that the Undiscovered Voices Fellowship is funded by the general operations budget. While the center has had scholarships in the past, the Undiscovered Voices Fellowship is unique, according to Semmel, in that it "reaches out to populations that may otherwise not be able to afford our workshops."
Submissions must be mailed to The Writer's Center (4508 Walsh Street, Bethesda, Md., 20815) to the attention of Undiscovered Voices Fellowship. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 15, 2009. For more information check out First Person Plural.
