Actor Ryan Reynolds is the new "Green Lantern."

Actor Ryan Reynolds has a new Hollywood proposal. The rising star beat out Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto and a rumored Justin Timberlake to land the starring role in "The Green Lantern."

This choice casting news certainly makes Ryan Reynolds one of the boys of summer, marked by the success of his roles in the hit comedy "The Proposal" and the action-adventure "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale") is directing the Warner Bros.' live-action film version of the iconic DC Comics hero. Production is expected to begin in January with additional casting still pending.

Meanwhile, Reynolds is set to begin work on "Buried," described as a dark independent drama that will shoot in Barcelona with director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds has been enlisted to play a private contractor kidnapped while in Iraq. Awaking in a coffin, he begins a race against time to attempt a rescue despite not knowing where in the desert he has been buried.

Release dates for "Buried" and "The Green Lantern" have yet to be confirmed.
