We've all got that friend.

It's the friend that smacks you in the face and tells you to move on after a break-up.  It's a friend that sneaks in and takes your keys when you're on your fourth martini.

For the Celtics, that friend is Mr. D.

Mr. D was sitting on the sidelines during the first quarter of the home opener.  "Go ahead and try to put on a show for the home crowd.  They deserve an exciting offensive game," he's rumored to have said.  When the C's gave up 28 first-quarter points, he supposedly told a fan in the front row, "I'm not worried.  We can still win this thing with our offense."  Walking into the locker room after the Celtics only managed 43 first-half points, a lip reader in the loge section saw him tell the ball boy ,"looks like I've got to start getting loose."

In the second half, Mr. D took the court.  Suddenly, there were no easy baskets.  Cleveland's shots were challenged.  They weren't given second chances.  The boys in white had their best buddy back, and they were all shutting LeBron and the Cavs down.

Mr. Defense smacked the Celtics in the face, looked them in the eye, and said, "you're better than these guys, but only with me around."  A 13-point third quarter later, we all remembered how much we need Mr. D around.  Thirty-five total Cavs points in the second half made us remember why we were even celebrating a championship Tuesday night.  38.8% shooting by the Cavs in the second half made us wonder why he wasn't there for a full game.

So Lakers fans, and their scribes, can anoint them champs now if they'd like.  They do look really good.  But they haven't had Mr. D. around.

And Mr. D has a lot of championships on his resume.
