Living only a relatively short distance from Michael Jackson's boyhood home in Gary, Indiana, I have met scores of people since last week who have come from far and wide to visit the nondescript house in Gary that Jackson once called home.
Some folks were from New York, others from Utah. Most were from everywhere in between.
No matter where they originate, the masses continue to descend on the small northwestern corner of Indiana to honor the King of Pop.
As a result, the mayor of Gary, Indiana, Rudy Clay, has big plans for Jackson's childhood stomping grounds.
Clay is planning to turn the old Jackson homestead into a museum - all part of a grander scheme to use the fame of the late superstar to give Gary its very own Graceland equivalent.
"If it's good enough for Elvis Presley, it's good enough for Michael Jackson," declared Clay.
Clay said Tuesday that the city of Gary has scheduled a free memorial service on July 10 at The U.S. Steel Yard, where Michael Jackson appeared during his last trip to Gary in 2003 (see video below).
The stadium, which holds 5,000, is expected to be at full capacity.
UPDATE from Yahoo News:
E! News has exclusively learned that the King of Pop's body is currently being held at the Hollywood Hills location of Forest Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuaries where it is expected to ultimately be interred.
While a source told E! News that, as of this morning, Jackson's body was "in the freezer" at the Forest Lawn mortuary, no official decision has yet been made on his burial. While the location is believed to be the most feasible for the family, the Jacksons are still weighing their options on potential sites.
