Blizzard Entertainment has a lot to be proud of as far as PC success goes. They have developed and published some of the most popular titles to grace computer monitors across the world. Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo have enjoyed monetary success combined with critical acclaim, but it was World of Warcraft, the wildly popular MMORPG, that finally managed to crack the mainstream code. WoW’s infiltration of pop culture has undoubtedly offered a new vantage point from which to view geek culture.

The Leeroy Jenkins video was part of the first wave of gamers making fun of themselves. With millions of youtube views, the video is funny for non-WoW players, but it’s hilarious for fans of the game. The video is so popular it has spawned spin-off videos as well.

Past five minute youtube clips, there is also an award winning online sitcom about the game. The Guild, written by Felicia Day, focuses on the interactions of WoW players and how they are affected by the real world.

Hit television series The Big Bang Theory would have been crazy not to take advantage of WoW culture. In this clip the band of geeks have been working for hours on end to attain the sword of Azeroth.

Possibly the most popular parody of WoW culture comes from the genius minds of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. In the tenth season of South Park, Parker and Stone fashion an entire episode around the addictive decay that can set in once the pull of WoW takes over.

But you know that something has made it to the big time when one of the billion dollar soda franchises decides to put it on their bottles. Yes, Mountain Dew, adored by geeks across the nation for its sugar and caffeine content, is now pimping Horde and Alliance fuel for fans of the game. And if that doesn’t sell you on World of Warcraft’s popularity, then the two hot girls picking up the drinks should.

Does the extra exposure make for an even better in-game experience than is already presented by the game? No, but it does help the players walk around with their heads held a bit higher. They are not only accepted, but represented by the media. And everyone knows you’ve got to represent.
