Gamer special occasions restaurant: Rheinlander
Every gamer has special occasions that need celebrating away from the fast food and bars. Rather it be Yule, a birthday, or World Wide Game Day, sometimes you want a nice meal with good friends, or an intimate gathering of two.
The Rheinlander German Restaurant is located at 5035 N.E. Sandy Boulevard, Portland, Oregon 97213. http://www.rheinlander.com/index.htm

From the fresh bread that is a major staple most anywhere in Europe to the meat and potatoes style fair that was so very common, Rheinlander offers it all.
Rheinlander is considered by many a special occasion restaurant due to it’s pricing being in the $$$ to $$$$ range, while it’s counterpart, Gustav’s, on the other side of the lobby is a more pub like atmosphere and pricing. However, Rheinlander has a wonderful ‘Early Evening Dinner Specials’ that range from $12.95 to $14.95 so it’s a bit more affordable than the typical dinner menu.
EARLY DINNER SPECIAL HOURS
Tuesday through Friday 5 pm – 6:30 pm
Saturday 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Sunday 3:30 pm – 5 pm
The Early special includes Swiss cheese fondue, bread with butter, and soup. For $2 more you can choose a salad instead of the soup.
Specialty restaurants can come in variations to completely authentic, barely recognizable as the cuisine in question to the ‘we’ve designed this to keep the locals happy’. Rheinlander seems to be a middle ground between authentic German and Swiss, Americanized fair.
A perfect example of this blend is in their Sauerbraten that is a traditional German dish. The meat is incredibly tender, flawless actually, and if it had been in a more traditional sauce made with sour cream it would indeed be exceptional. However they drizzle a sweetly sour sauce made with currents, which completely ruins the feel for the slow cooked meal. Cooking the meat to that level of perfection is so difficult, it is a shame it’s ruined by the wrong style of sauce.
The Jager Rahm Schnitzel however while still a mix of non traditional sauce with a traditional meat dish works very well. The pounded, breaded chicken breast is served with a mushroom and paprika sauce that works very well and is a delight.
Another dish offered is the Huhnerbrust Viennese Though you may never see anything called this while in Germany, it’s delicious. It is a classic chicken schnitzel served with garlic mashed potatoes and sour red cabbage. However, you may choose to switch out the red cabbage for spatzle and order Madera sauce to go with it and it is a perfect meal.
Overall, Rheinlander does not disappoint. The service is always been exceptional, especially if you get the server named Steven, and you never leave hungry.
Rheinlander is recommended to anyone who has a special occasion or just wants to treat themselves.
